Welcome Message

Message from the President

Breast cancer does not need a color…pink…nor does it need a month…October.  Breast cancer needs a cure!

It needs research funding to support finding a cure! Michigan Breast Cancer Coalition works year-round to persuade our lawmakers in the U.S. Congress in Washington DC to support breast cancer research funding, especially research on how to prevent breast cancer and how to inhibit breast cancer metastasis.

There’s no question that the pink ribbon has successfully raised awareness about breast cancer and screening mammography, and has been used to raise money to support breast cancer research.  However, any company can put a pink ribbon on its products, and some products that sport pink ribbons don’t contribute to breast cancer research in any way. Before you make a pink ribbon purchase, ask these critical questions:

(1)  How much money from your purchase will go to support breast cancer research? Write a letter asking the company to be transparent about its donations.

(2)  Do the pink ribbon products contain chemicals linked to breast cancer?

Consider giving directly to breast cancer organizations whose work you believe is most essential to addressing breast cancer research.  We sincerely thank you for your support as we advocate for you and future generations!

Message from the Board of Directors

Spring is a busy time for those who are involved in breast cancer advocacy.  At the Michigan Breast Cancer Coalition, we represent the concerns of Michigan residents regarding policies and funding of issues important to the breast cancer community, such as breast cancer research, environmental toxins that increase cancer risk, and access to quality health care, to our Michigan legislators here at home, and to our Congressional legislators who represent us in Washington, DC.

MiBCC continues to serve as a point of contact within Michigan for advocacy efforts regarding federal funding, changes that affect breast cancer health care, and legislation that affects the environment. To stay informed, please visit us often on our Facebook page, Michigan Breast Cancer Coalition, and website for news and email alerts, so that you, too, can participate in our advocacy efforts!

Spring is also a busy time for those involved in breast cancer research. Organizations, such as, the  American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) announce changes in their leadership, and report results of studies on new therapies and results of clinical trials at their annual meetings. Both of these organizations provide an opportunity for patient advocates interested in research advocacy to attend and participate in their meetings; for more information, visit ASCO and AACR.

We hope you will continue to share in supporting MiBCC and the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s goals to find ways to improve outcomes, decrease mortalities, and end breast cancer by 2020. Please join us at our bi-monthly member meetings (contact us for information about time and place), or come to an event we participate in and learn what you can do to be an advocate, too!
