Politics of Breast Cancer

  • Research is the only way that progress is made in understanding how breast cancer develops, what the risk factors are for developing breast cancer, how to diagnose it, treat it, and, most importantly, prevent it.
  • Federal funding agencies (NIH, NCI, DOD) are the predominant source of research funding.
  • Few people are aware that research funding levels and priorities are determined by our lawmakers in the U.S. Congress.

“Breast cancer is a political issue. Decisions that affect how individual women are treated, how much research and what research is performed, whether the environmental connections to breast cancer are understood and dealt with – those are all made at the political level.”

~Fran Visco, President, National Breast Cancer Coalition
