The Michigan Breast Cancer Coalition (MIBCC) launches: “Knittin’ In The Mitten”

Fighting Breast Cancer, One Stitch at a time:  The Michigan Breast Cancer Coalition (MIBCC) launches: “Knittin’ In The Mitten”, A Campaign among knitting shops in Michigan to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Initiatives and support affecting Michiganders.

BRIGHTON, MI — MIBCC, has a three prong Mission:  Educate, Advocate and Eradicate Breast Cancer.  They also provide front line guidance to families who are living with the day to day realities of breast cancer.  To help raise public awareness of the MIBCC and the work still to be done by this committed group of breast cancer survivors, a state wide campaign, Knittin’ In The Mitten is being rolled out at knitting shops across Michigan.  “The campaign which runs from October 15 through December 15 was designed to be a win-win event for everyone”, says MIBCC President, Becky Cwiek.  Experienced and new knitters alike can participate and contribute to the cause by purchasing a kit for a nominal fee.  Knitters around the state will knit either a chemo cap which will be donated to a facility in the local community or a 6” square.  The yarn for the squares was generously donated by Universal Yarn. The squares will be sewn into blankets for cancer patients and also used in a creative way to help ensure that our state legislators are aware and committed to support legislation that affect women’s health care issues.

Why knit shops?  Knit shops are often a vibrant part of the local community.  Women gather there to knit and support each other, their families and their local communities.   Everyone in Michigan deserves to know what resources are available to support Breast Cancer Initiatives, as do people in need living with breast cancer.  This disease affects one out of every eight women, which means that most people are affected in some way.  Working through the knit shops is a wonderful way to begin to educate communities about MIBCC and encourage people to join the coalition in their efforts to eradicate this horrible disease.

MIBCC was founded by breast cancer survivors across Michigan and is a member of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, (www.stopbreastcancer.org). Their Mission is to Educate, Advocate and Eradicate Breast Cancer. For more information and a list of ways to be an advocate call 800-634-5119, or go to www.mibcc.org.
