What We Do

MiBCC works tirelessly to influence legislation, increase research funding, train advocates, educate the public and advance initiatives nationally, statewide and locally in the fight against breast cancer.

  • We provide up-to-date information for breast cancer advocates, survivors, and patients about treatment, diagnosis, and prevention from trusted sources.
  • We are active members and serve on the board of the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) to ensure ongoing funding of breast cancer research, advance quality health care for all, support advocate training through Project LEAD and set the right scientific priorities to achieve significant progress in ending breast cancer.
  • We engage in ongoing communications with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., and in the State of Michigan to influence legislative important to fighting breast cancer.
  • Our advocates participate in the Annual Team Leader Training to stay updated on NBCC’s legislative and public policy priorities and prepare for the annual Lobby Day in Washington, D.C. each May.
  • Together with our grassroots advocacy network, we work to increase breast cancer research funding for the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment Program.
  • We also work to advance new federal legislation such as the Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act and statewide legislation such as the Oral Parity bill and Michigan Medicaid Expansion.
  • We influence national breast cancer research by serving as reviewers for the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program to bring the patients’ perspectives and sense of urgency for high impact, breakthrough research.
  • We also influence statewide breast cancer research by serving on the University of Michigan Breast Cancer Advocate Advisory Committee, which brings patients and researchers together to develop better study protocols and promote awareness of clinical trials.
  • We affect statewide breast cancer initiatives by participating as a member, workgroup committee member and past board member of the Michigan Cancer Coalition, which works to reduce the burden of cancer for all people by addressing health disparities through collaboration, evidenced-based practices and improved quality of care.
  • We raise breast cancer awareness by participating in local education events of hospitals and other breast cancer organizations.
  • Our trained advocates participate in the San Antonio Breast Cancer Research Symposium, the Annual Society of Clinical Oncologists Conference, the National Breast Cancer Coalition Annual Leadership Summit and Project LEAD to remain current on the latest research breakthroughs.
