Breast Density Notification Law

Dense breast tissue can make it harder to detect cancer in a mammogram, but women may not know whether they have dense breasts, and whether they should consider supplemental screening. A new law, the Breast Density Notification Law that went into effect in Michigan on June 1, 2015 now requires that your mammography report include information about your breast density.

Read an excellent summary by Robin Erb in the Detroit Free Press.  The process of reading a mammogram for dense breast tissue is likened in the Free Press article “to trying to find a cotton ball in a snowstorm.” Please share this information with your friends and relatives so they know to ask and become informed about their breast density.

Michigan became the 21st state to adopt this legislation, with variations of the law existing in other states.
