Our Speaker:  Kelly A. Hirko, PhD, MPH,

Assistant Professor, Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics,
College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University.

Join us to hear Kelly Hirko, PhD, MPH provide a brief overview of the epidemiology of breast cancer, including patterns of disease occurrence and disparities in risk and survival.  She will then describe some of her research efforts including characterizing the biological mechanisms underlying associations between modifiable risk factors and breast cancer risk, understanding risk factors for breast cancer subtypes (including young-onset breast cancer and inflammatory breast cancer), and research to address breast cancer disparities.  Finally, she will briefly mention ongoing research using implementation science approaches to address rural cancer care delivery challenges.

About Our Speaker: Professor Hirko is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and a community-based researcher at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan. Her education and training are in Epidemiologic methods and her research incorporates biomarkers to examine underlying associations of lifestyle factors and breast cancer risk, with a particular emphasis on etiology of aggressive breast cancer subtypes, including young-onset breast cancer and inflammatory breast cancer.  As a community-based researcher in a rural clinical setting, she is interested in using Implementation Science approaches to address rural cancer disparities.
