Improving Care for Patients with Breast Cancer Brain Metastases

Hear Dr. Aki Morikawa review the research underway at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center on metastatic breast cancer with brain metastases. This will include an overview of the clinical trial results presented at San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium on Tucatinib as well as the site trial at the University of Michigan on this drug for leptomeningeal metastases. Dr. Morikawa will also discuss the new multi-disciplinary approach underway at the University of Michigan on care coordination in improving outcomes and patient support for patients with metastatic breast cancer with brain metastases.

About Our Speaker: After earning her M.PH from Boston University of Public Health, Dr. Morikawa received her MD/PhD at the Emory University School of Medicine. After completing her internship and residency training there, she subsequently underwent fellowship training in Medical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In 2014, she joined the University of Michigan as Clinical Lecturer and subsequently appointed as Clinical Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine. Her research involves clinical and translational investigations in breast cancer as well as brain and leptomeningeal metastases from solid tumors. Dr. Morikawa has been a recipient of Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Fellowship and a Career Development Award from the ASCO. She currently volunteers as a co-investigator on ASCO’s Targeted Agent and Profiling Utilization Registry (TAPUR) study. At the University of Michigan, she co-leads the Multidisciplinary Brain Metastases Working Group which fosters CNS metastases research and collaborations with laboratory-based experts and clinical investigators from neurosurgery, radiation oncology, neuro-oncology, neuroradiology, and pathology.
