Dr. Sean Smith reviews the ways that breast cancer surgery or radiation may lead to pain. This may be direct damage, or it may be due to changes in the shoulder region that affect posture and alignment, which can lead to problems down the road. He addresses how to manage these issues, and when it would help to work with a rehabilitation specialist.
About Our Speaker: Dr. Sean Smith is the Medical Director of Michigan Medicine’s Cancer Rehabilitation program, with a clinical emphasis on restoring function and reducing symptom burden in patients with a history of cancer. In addition to chairing the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation’s (AAPM&R) Cancer Rehabilitation Physician Consortium Bold Initiative and the multi-site research collaborative, Cancer Rehabilitation Metrics Consortium, he serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Oncology and is a Deputy Associate Editor for Supportive Care in Cancer. He has published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and has conducted educational seminars on cancer rehabilitation on three continents.
